Maleny’s past
Before the first European settlement in the 1870s, the area was home to the Nalbo and Dallambara aboriginal tribes. After European settlement, the region was initially known as a provider of Cedar and other valued timbers, before developing into a hub for quality dairy products.
The famous Maleny Dairy remains as a reminder of the past, but the town now enjoys a reputation as a destination for tourists and day-trippers.
Maleny Lifestyle
Along with suburban-style living in and around the main street, many of the locals enjoy life on acreage properties. Situated throughout North Maleny, Reesville, Witta, Curramore, Booroobin etc, and across the scenic ridges leading to neighboring Montville.
It is also through these hills and valleys that the majority of accommodation is to be found. All within easy reach of Maleny’s Maple Street.
Why Visit Maleny
Outstanding Attractions
Maleny is home to, or in easy reach of some outstanding attractions. Add these to local festivals, a thriving arts community, the old-world charm of Maple street and abundant, exquisite accommodation and there is a lot to like about this Hinterland Gem.
Mist Filled Valleys
Maleny’s elevation means that it is surrounded by massive deep valleys.
It has the Glasshouse mountains to the South, Connondale and Kenilworth to the West, Monteville and Caloundra to the East and the Obi Obi valley looking North to Gympie.
These valleys provide the vast panoramas Maleny is famous for. Many mornings through the year these valleys are full of pure white misty clouds, providing a unique outlook that photographers love.
Almost too big to photograph in some places. Its like looking out of the window of a plane from the window of your car or cabin.
Maleny is a magical place to live, visit or holiday, and an unsurpassed wedding location.
Maleny’s Weather
Located on the southern end of the Sunshine Coast Hinterland, Maleny enjoys a moderate subtropical climate. Thanks to its’ abundant rainfall the Maleny area remains lush and green throughout most of the year. Read more about our seasons and climate.
It also enjoys sufficient variation in seasons to make it an ideal place for a winter getaway, to enjoy a luxury cabin with Spa and Fireplace.
