Scandi at Maleny
Scandi at Maleny is a surprisingly elegant Cabin, nestled into the hills in Booroobin. You wouldn’t expect this level of contemporary elegance in a country getaway. But that is exactly what Dee and Pete, your hosts at Scandi have created!
But whilst it is classy and full of elegant surprises, the quality really isn’t the most significant feature of this unique location.
I had the joy of chatting with Dee one afternoon last week and to be honest, two hours went in a blink. I could have kept chatting well into the day. Her level of knowledge and passion for this project was captivating! I truly felt like I had a new best friend.
Dee and her fiancé Pete, purchased this eco-friendly villa 2 years ago. Smack in the middle of Covid! That takes courage and commitment. Their research and their numbers showed they needed very few visitors to make this a viable business venture, even during a global pandemic. So off they went.
Their thinking was, even if people can’t travel globally, they are still going to want and need a break. So why not provide somewhere relatively close to home and beautiful at the same time.
Dee calls herself ‘green’ having never done anything like this before. However, you can see her background in events and wedding planning sneaking in. With all the surprising little treats and elegant features that make Scandi at Maleny the stunning location it is.
Carbon Neutral Accommodation
But what really makes this particular location stand out in the increasingly noisy Sunshine Coast Hinterland Accommodation market, is her total and unbending commitment to sustainability.
Dee goes through a rigorous process every year to prove she is doing everything required to be carbon neutral and has partnered with Carbon Neutral , the longest standing carbon offset provider in Australia.
Not only did she strive to make her location carbon neutral, but once she’d achieved it, she then backdated to when they first opened. So, she can proudly say, Scandi at Maleny is carbon neutral and always has been!
As you wander through the understated, elegant lounge into one of the two master suites, each fitted with large showers and stunning baths, you’ll notice a small but significant notice above the bath.
This is just one reminder of our impact on the planet in every single aspect of our daily lives.
I was so impressed at how gently and playfully Dee had pointed out just how quickly we consume our resources without too much thought. Most of us can relate to the quantity behind 1000 bottles of wine!!
Dee’s passion for this project comes through in every small detail of her business.
On arrival, her guests are treated to local cheeses from the region, Maleny Food Co Ice cream, local coffee and other goodies. Food miles matter and are a major consideration, even in the welcome pack.
Early in the project, Dee realised she needed support to become the best she could possibly be, seeking out and joining many relevant groups. She loves her involvement and now helps to educate and support other like-minded businesses.
Every visitor makes a difference
All cleaning and bathroom products are sourced from Zero Co (another amazing business to check out!) and to take her commitment even further, Dee donates to Oz Harvest.
Ozharvest was founded in 2004 and is now the leading food rescue organisation in Australia. They save surplus food from ending up in landfill, and deliver it to charities that help feed people in need.
Dee and Pete committed to donating 50 meals per booking on behalf of her guests. She even sends the guest a copy of the receipt showing the donation made on their behalf. Talk about a feel-good result for your weekend away!
From the noticeable lack of printed material (instructions for the tv etc. are all available in a digital format) to energy-efficient white goods, there is nothing in the cabin that damages the planet.
As we chatted, we discussed the need for more small business to take up the challenge of making their businesses sustainable.
Dee shared just how easy it had become for her and how much support she’d received from organisations aligned with hers. Facebook groups of like minded business operators shared tips and tricks in the early days to ensure Dee got off to a fast and ‘sustainable’ start.
“If it’s too hard no one will stick to it” seems to be the general opinion in the ever growing Eco communities both on and offline.
Its apparent Dee is a stylist at her core, evident in all the elegant soft furnishings, colours and fixtures. Each designed to pamper the guests. Yet she hasn’t compromised her commitment to a cleaner planet.
I love the ethos of Scandi at Maleny
Are those of you with a similar passion for sustainability, starting to sense why I felt like I’d found a new friend? Dee is truly a kindred spirit for those of us who are striving to make a difference, no matter how big or small!
Just as impressive as the ethos, is the location.
The views overlooking Reesville from every room are breathtaking and knowing Maleny and surrounding areas as I do, I can imagine the ever changing scenery greeting guests. Whether from a storm rolling in, or a gentle breeze with a few soft clouds overhead, the vista is going to delight you.
The location lends itself to peace and tranquillity. Although situated only 20 minutes from Maleny’s main street, you could be in the middle of nowhere! The only sounds are the birds and the breeze in the trees.
But if you do want a change of pace, you can venture into town and treat yourself to a tasty lunch at the numerous cafes, or a spot of shopping in the many boutiques, art galleries and bookshops the area is known for.
Or walk down next to the cabin for a picnic on the grass, take in the views and tranquillity while completely immersing yourself in the environment.
You are in for a treat when you book a holiday at Scandi at Maleny. Enjoy all the elegance of a high-end city escape, but with the gentle slow pace of the country.
And all done sustainably.
